No, No, NO! My Nightmare Comes True.
You know, this is totally not fair.
I spent 70 dollars to pay for my game. It was shipped from Amazon US to a big warehouse in California, then to New York and then finally to the heart of Europe, where is a small (but nice) country called Slovakia.
Since I wanted to have it pretty fast, I paid UPSP almost 50 bucks for shipping. OK, that’s my problem, you can say — and I’m actually not complaining. I’m so happy about this fact. I have a game that was packed in a box with English manual and writings. And most importantly, the game is in American English, too. Yay!
But, no, EA Games don’t like me at all. They just have to give me a little bit of Czech languge, because yes, I ordered the game just to avoid having a game in Czech language. (Long story short — Slovakia is a neighbor of Czech Republic and the languages are very similar, so I understand Czech language fluently).
Why? The translation of the game is terrible. And then, why would I want to play the game in Czech language when I always played in in English? In fact, this game pretty much learnt me the basics of English. But again, the translation is terrible. They translate the names. They translate everything. Don Lothario was named as Don Juan. I know the translation was pretty accurate, but I just don’t like it. At all. The rest (I thankfully don’t remember) was much worse.
And now this. Today, I opened The Sims 3 Launcher and what do you think I see? Exactly! The news, Exchange and all feeds synced from the official site are in Czech language. Oh, great. Just what I needed, thank you EA Games.
I suppose it has to do something with my IP adress. It seems like they realized the place where I connect from and they just automatically sync the news in the launcher. Honestly, it’s not that bad (although the translation is — even in this case — very bad), but it really sucks when you think you avoid things like this and then you just find out that you don’t.
Just in case you wonder, if I translated the writings back to Enligsh, they would say something like this:
- 0 news message (translation) — 0 new messages (original)
- you have new added — new uploads
- go to store Store — visit The Sims 3 Store
No, this is really not fair at all.

That doesn’t make sense, since you bought the game from the US. Stupid EA!

OH My God!!!
I know what that you mean! Because I play the Sims in English too. I don’t like the game in Spanish (that is my mother language) because I’m from México and they use the Spain Spanish that (of course) is different and I hate.
The bad translations and the weird names… I totally prefer in English the game, because the original is in English and because the game help me to learn more about this language.

This is random: But I have never understood why the Americans need their own language. What’s wrong with UK English? They clearly don’t like the letter u.

Haha, Andy, I know what you mean. Maybe you’ve noticed that I mostly use AmE here, too. The words are just shorter to write for me, that’s all. Also, most of the people who visit my site are from the US.
But from the etymological point of view, I would just say that when the nations divided, Americans just started to use their own words (or simlply write them differently) and since English is not a codified language, there were no real “rules” they needed to qualify. Also, the USA became a multicultural society much sooner, which definitely had a big impact on the language.
Well, it’s just what I think.
And they not only don’t like the letter u, they use many different words for the same things you say in BrE (lift — elevator, chips — scrisps), they exchange some letters in cerain words (center — centre, theater — theatre, tyres — tires, gray — grey). There are also small differences in grammar (it’s ok for Americans to use past simple instead of present perfect when using conjuctions as already, yet etc.)… The list goes on and on.
And I talk too much again.

Oh no to EA for bad translation! I didn’t know about that. They should be informed that they have this terrible mistake which is absolutely unfair for other international countries!
